The Three Types of Social Security Cards

1 - The first type of Social Security card displays your name and your Social Security number, and it allows you to work in the country without any restrictions. It is issued to citizens of the United States and people who have been lawfully admitted into the country permanently.

2 - Similar to the first, this Social Security card displays your name and Social Security number, but it includes “Valid for work only with DHS authorization” as a restriction. This card is issued to people who have been allowed into the US lawfully but temporarily. These people will also need DHS authorization to work.

3 - The third and final type of Social Security card displays your name and Social Security number, and it includes “Not valid for employment” as a restriction. These cards are issued to foreigners who have lawfully been allowed into the US.

However, they are not authorized by DHS to work, but they do possess a valid reason not relating to work to need a Social Security number. They are also issued to people who need a Social Security number due to a federal law that requires them to have a Social Security number to receive a service or benefits.

Applying for a New, Corrected, or Replacement Card

If your state-issued identification or driver’s license was issued by Alabama, Nevada, Minnesota, Oklahoma, New Hampshire, Oregon, or West Virginia, then this service is not available to you yet. You will also be unable to access this service if your driver’s license or ID card was issued by a US territory, like Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands.

If you are a citizen of the US and have not received a name change or Social Security card recently, you might not be able to apply online to replace your card.
